How to Become a Registered Investment Adviser

An investment adviser manages large portfolios of assets for fees as opposed to commissions. There are several career paths that may lead to the title of investment adviser, and a variety of educational and licensing requirements. A registered investment adviser is one who is registered with the Securities Exchange Commission.

      Understand the financial and securities markets. No degree is required.

      Pass the Series 65 Exam. This is the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority exam that reviews how securities are traded as well as how assets are managed. Most who take the Series 65 have other FINRA licenses, such as the Series 6 or Series 7.

      Register through FINRA or a FINRA-registered firm within the state of residence and the state(s) where the assets will be managed. This is required for registered investment advisers who manage assets of less than $25 million.

      Register with the SEC when you are to manage more than $25 million in assets.

      Obtain other professional certifications as desired to increase knowledge and credibility. You may study to become a certified financial planner, a certified public accountant, a lawyer or a chartered financial analyst.
