Step 1
When your dog is indoors, keep a fan on him to cool him off. If your fan is too high to reach the dog when he is sitting or lying down, get a smaller fan and place it on the floor.
-
Step 2
Always provide a dish of cold water for the dog. Try ice cubes when they weather gets really warm as a treat!
-
Step 3
When outdoors, make sure there is a shady and cool location where your dog can retreat to.
-
Step 4
On very warm days, limit the time your dog stays outdoors to avoid heatstroke. Especially during the peak sunlight hours of 12-3 pm when it is usually the warmest.
-
Step 5
Feel your dog. If his/her coat and skin feels warm to the touch, try cooling your dog off with cool water. Submerge a small towel in cool water and pat your dog down. For even more summer fun, buy a small pool specifically for your dog to place outside in the backyard!
-
Step 6
Most people are split on the decision to give their dogs a summer “haircut”, that is to shorten the length of the coat. The fur protects their skin from getting sunburned, but too long a coat can make them hotter. Find a good middle ground and also ask your vet what is recommend for your particular breed.
