Working from home can be very rewarding. It can also be frustrating if you fail to follow some very simple steps. I hope the information to follow will help you decide what is and/or is not right for you.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  • Notepad
  • A quiet place to concentrate
  1. Step 1

Decide first if working from home for yourself is really what you want to do. Can you be disciplined enough to take action at home without supervision? Or are you a person that needs the rigid structure of an office atmosphere with peers close by to keep you focused on the job at hand.

  2. Step 2

Once you decide working from home is what you really want to do you will need to decide what kind of business you would enjoy. Yes enjoy! Why build a business at home if you're not happy with what you are doing? What do you like to do? What makes you happy?

  3. Step 3

Once you have decided what would make you happy do your research. Is the market already saturated with what you want to do? If so, rethink it. Don't set yourself up for failure. Some questions to ask:
    1. Is my product unique or is the market already saturated with my product or very similar products?
    2. How will my product be delivered to my customers?
    3. How will I get my customers?
    4. How much lead time do I need to fulfill an order?
    5. Where will I get the supplies I will need?
    6. Will this business be lucrative?
    7. Will I be handle all the orders by myself?
    8. How an where will I show samples of my product?

  4. Step 4

Another question you will need to address is if you want to produce the product or find a company that is already established and allows affiliates or distributors.
If you choose to be an affiliate or a direct distributor do your research on the company. Some questions to ask:
    1. How old is the company. How long has it been in existence?
    2. Is it debt free?
    3. Is it privately owned or publicly traded?
    4. What are its return policies?
    5. Have I used or even seen its products? How did I feel about the product?

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't be afraid to invest in your home-based business.
  • Be willing to talk to friends and family about your new business.
  • Be willing to sacrifice time to promote your business.
  • Research, Research, Research. There are a lot of scams out there. Be sure to ask questions. It's your time and money...use it wisely.
