Not sure if you can handle this furry creature?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Time to list
  1. Step 1

The first time I held this little guy, It was over. He just ran away with my heart. Here is what we did when we bought our ferret.
First we visited it in the pet store and handled it a couple times. Then we read up on them. Went home, and ferret proofed our house. Ferrets can get into some very small spaces so we had to be sure, (since he would have the run of the house) that he wouldn't get into a deadly situation.

  2. Step 2

Block off any small crevices, behind televisions, washers, dryers etc. Basically anywhere a mouse could go, so could he. If you choose not to let them run unsupervised, then a nice sized cage in a room with lots of activity is ideal. They love attention and can be great friends.

  3. Step 3

Set aside playtime for them and be ready for them to give you a run for the money! When making the bed, mine would love to get under the blanket and play. Again, if they have the run of the house, they are what I call corner dwellers.

  4. Step 4

Set a litter pan (they have triangular pans at the pet store)in every corner he seems to like. Otherwise, you'll have many surprises. Be careful what you feed them, they like cat food, but the nutrients in the ferret food is needed for their health.

  5. Step 5

And finally, before you make your purchase, Check your area for a vet that treats ferrets. We live in a small town, so when we had to get him to the vet, the closest one that treated them was an hour and a half away. You will have many hours of enjoyment with your new friend but please keep in mind, they have a life span of 8 to 10 years.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's always best to do research before buying any pet.
  • Ferrets do have an odor, musky sort of smell, but they can have the scent glands removed, and not be as strong smelling.
