Store bought cough syrups, while effective, often have undesirable side effects or ingredients. Homemade cough syrups can be tailored to fit your individual needs and can be created for little to no money using ingredients already found in your pantry. For a dry, hacking cough, a syrup made from honey, vinegar, and cayenne pepper can provide needed relief of your symptoms without drowsiness or harmful ingredients.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Pour 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar into a saucepan. Apple cider vinegar has anti-bacterial and detoxifying properties.

  2. Step 2

Add 1 teaspoon of honey to the mixture. Honey coats the throat providing soothing relief to irritated and sore throats.

  3. Step 3

Add 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the saucepan. Cayenne pepper opens up congested nasal passages and relieves pain.

  4. Step 4

Simmer over low heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  5. Step 5

Allow the liquid to cool, then pour it into a glass jar for storage in a refrigerator.

  6. Step 6

To relieve cough, take 1 tablespoon two times a day, or as needed.
