Decorate a plain mirror with wire and colored glass, a mosaic or vintage rhinestone jewelry. Transform your simple mirror into a work of art that you can easily make by following these step-by-step instructions. Find most of the materials for these plain mirror decorating ideas at your local hobby store. You can find vintage rhinestone jewelry at local thrift stores, yard sales and from online auction sites.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Solder wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Round-nose pliers
  • Flat-back glass stones
  • Spray paint
  • Glue
  • Ceramic pieces and sea glass
  • Vintage jewelry
  1. Step 1

Decorate your plain mirror with wire swirls and colored glass pieces that are wrapped in wire. Cut an 8-inch section of solder wire. Hold the wire at one tip firmly with the side edge of your round-nose pliers. Twist the pliers so that the wire rolls in a tight spiral. Wrap the wire until your spiral measures 1 inch in diameter. Wrap the remaining wire around the perimeter of the flat-back glass stone, or cabochon facing the opposite direction from the flat spiral to form an "S" shape. Make enough spirals to go around the perimeter of your mirror. Remove the stone and spray paint the wire with metal paint to match your décor. Replace the stone and glue your decoration to the mirror or the mirror frame with strong, clear glue like Liquid Nail or E-6000.

  2. Step 2

Create a mosaic-type decoration around the perimeter of your plain mirror. Find flat-back glass beads, sea glass and bits of broken ceramics to fit on the face of your fame or to create a frame that's at least 2 inches wide. Arrange the pieces close together, layering as needed to create a tightly jumbled grouping. Unlike other mosaics, there is no need to grout this mirror mosaic. If you prefer the look of a grouted mosaic, space the glass and ceramic pieces so they are not touching. You can create as you go or lay out the design around the outside of your mirror. You don't have to cover the entire perimeter; you can decorate the corners or any section of the face of the mirror. Epoxy glue, Liquid Nail or E-6000 craft glue will work for this project.

  3. Step 3

Make a frame or decorate a frame for your plain mirror with vintage rhinestone jewelry. Glue earrings, bracelets and pendants around the perimeter of the mirror or mirror frame with epoxy, Liquid Nail, E-6000 or a glue gun. Drape vintage necklaces around the jewelry, leaving some sections movable.

Tips & Warnings
  • Tape off and paint the perimeter of a mirror without a frame if you prefer a dark background for your glass or jewelry.
  • Items secured directly to the mirror with a glue gun are easier to remove than with other types of glue as they do not adhere as strongly with the mirror.
