Things You'll Need:
- Samples of previous campaigns
- Black portfolio case
-
Step 1
Choose samples that match up with your client or potential employer. If you're interviewing with a creative director at an ad agency that specializes in direct mail, choose samples of work you've done in direct mail. Choose colorful samples if possible. Most times creative directors won't actually read your portfolio, so having samples with appealing graphics are helpful. Use samples that have been highly successful campaigns. If you don't have samples, write or illustrate a sample campaign geared to your client's needs.
-
Step 2
Gather testimonials you have from prior clients or employers. Testimonials are helpful because they allow you to demonstrate a proven track record. Here's an idea you can try if you don't have any testimonials. Contact a local business owner. Volunteer to work on their ad campaign for free in exchange for a testimonial.
-
Step 3
Include any articles in magazines, e-zines, or newsletters that pertain to your client's area of service. Be very selective. Use only your best work. If you are questioning whether or not to use a certain article or sample, chances are you shouldn't use it.
-
Step 4
Put it all together. Put your absolute best work in the front of your portfolio. You can purchase a black portfolio at most office supply stores. Make sure your portfolio is no larger than 11 by 17 inches.
-
Step 5
Make your portfolio look as professional as possible. Use clear transparent sheets to protect your samples and testimonials. Use folders if necessary for case studies, brochures and sales letters.
