With persistence, even dark or black hair can be bleached until it is white. It will take several rounds of bleaching, which will damage your hair to some extent. Decide how much of your hair you want to bleach ahead of time. At first, your dark hair will probably turn orange or yellow. Just remember, there's no going back once you bleach your hair--until it grows out.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair bleach kit
  • Plastic gloves
  • Bobby pins
  • Plastic hair net
  1. Step 1

Prepare your bleach mix according to the kit's instructions. Mix it well and try not to breath in the harsh, chemical smell.

  2. Step 2

Apply the bleach mix to the desired section(s) of your dark or black hair. Pin up your bleached hair with bobby pins, or keep it tidy with a plastic hair net. Leave the bleach in your hair for 40 minutes to an hour.

  3. Step 3

Wash your hair with conditioner. Some bleach kits come with a tiny bottle of conditioner.

  4. Step 4

Repeat as necessary to obtain snow white hair. Be wary of the damage you are causing to your hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never leave bleach in for over an hour, as it can greatly damage your hair. Check your package for the recommended time to leave the bleach on. Don't worry about bleaching your roots as much as the rest of your dark or black hair, as they are generally the most susceptible part of your hair to the bleach. Hydrogen peroxide can help strip your hair of any color and make it whiter.
  • Make sure you wear gloves whenever you are going to touch the bleach. Protect your eyes, face and clothes form the bleach.

on 8/21/2009 If you have dark hair and wish it to be white, make multiple trips to a reputable stylist. They can get your hair as pale as you want it to be with the least amount of damage by taking it down level by level over time.
In between visits, take extra special care of your hair.
Use the specialty products for repairing damaged hair that your local beauty supply shop sells.
Ask for advice at the store, the people working there will most likely be trained in the use of products (they are at all Sally's beauty supply stores, I know because I worked there when I was a kid).
Once you've learned how the stylist did the work, and you've gotten into the habit of properly caring for your bleached hair you can continue the work by bleaching out your roots as they grow in.
You'll also know the process fairly well if you chose to let your hair grow out and later decide to go white once more.
