How to Clean a Mattress From Bed Wetting

Save

Whether you have a child in the house that's just starting to potty train or guests with uncertain bladder control, it's inevitable that at some point you'll have to clean urine off a mattress after an episode of bed wetting. The process is simple and will involve fewer than 10 minutes of work on your part, although you may need to let the mattress sit during the cleaning process. While recently excreted urine is sterile, wearing gloves to protect your hands--especially if you have any scrapes on them--is always a good idea.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic gloves or rubber dishwashing gloves
  • Paper towels
  • Garbage bag
  • White vinegar
  • Liquid dishwashing soap
  • Clean sponges
  • Cornstarch or baking soda
  • Blot up as much or the urine as possible with paper towels. Seal the paper towels inside a plastic garbage bag and discard immediately. Make sure you wear gloves.

  • Mix one part white vinegar and two parts liquid dishwashing soap in a bowl. Use a clean sponge to scrub this mixture into the urine-soaked portions of the mattress and let it sit for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

  • Wipe as much of the soap mixture up as possible with a clean, dry sponge or paper towels.

  • Sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda generously over the wet area and let sit until dry; this may take several hours. Once the cornstarch or baking soda is dry, vacuum it up.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're concerned about whether you missed any urine stains or spots on the mattress, shine a black light on it. Any urine you missed will glow.
