Things You'll Need:
- Screwdriver or socket wrench
- Replacement starter cord
-
Step 1
Remove the plastic external covering of your lawnmower. To do this, unscrew the four to five screws on the top of your lawnmower that hold the covering in place. All mowers will be set up slightly different, but all of them have the ability to remove the external covering.
-
Step 2
Locate the small disk in which the cord is wrapped. Remove the entire cord housing by removing the screw that holds it down. Some models may be held in place by a nut and bolt system; in this case, you will need a socket wrench.
-
Step 3
Identify if the cord has broken off at some point. If this is the case, you will need to replace it with a new cord. Unwrap the old cord, making sure to note in which direction the cord is wrapped: clockwise or counterclockwise. There will be a small knot at the end of the cord that is anchored by a section of the disk. Insert the new pull cord's knot (these come pre-knotted), into the section of the disk that is slotted for it. Wrap the new cord around the disk in the opposite way you removed it, and feed the excess cord through the top of the lawnmower's external covering you removed in Step 1.
-
Step 4
Identify if the cord has simply been tangled up with itself and has not broken off. If this is the case, you can simply unwrap and rewrap the existing cord around the disk again without having to replace it with a new one. However, if the cord is aged at all, you may want to go ahead and replace it since you already have the mower open. It will save you from having to open up the lawnmower again at some point in the future.
-
Step 5
Reconnect the cord's disk housing and rescrew the external covering of the mower. After rescrewing all of the components, prime the mower by pressing five to 10 times on the clear bubble-shaped button. Finally, pull the cord to check that the mower starts as it should.
