Even the cheapest modern windows are gas-enclosed, double-pane models that don't require maintenance, but what if you have old single-pane windows? No matter how well-maintained they are, or how well built, eventually you will need to re-glaze the windows. Fortunately, all you need to re-glaze your single-pane windows is a large can of window glazing and a putty knife.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Putty knife
  • Window glazing
  1. Step 1

Use a stiff-blade putty knife or painter's 5-in-1 tool to carefully scrape off existing window glazing. Do not remove the glazier's points, as they hold the window in place.

  2. Step 2

Roll a ball of window glazing between the palms of your hands, elongating it to resemble a piece of rope.

  3. Step 3

Place the rope on the edges of the windows where the window and sash meet, and press it firmly in place.

  4. Step 4

Smooth on the window glazing. Place one edge of the putty knife on the glass at an angle, rest the middle of the blade on the window sash and pull it toward you to create a solid, angled line of glazing. Try to match the angle of the old window glazing.

  5. Step 5

Give the glazing 48 to 72 hours to cure, then apply a quality primer and two finish coats of paint.
