Install Kingston Memory

Computer memory, or RAM, is designed to give your computer the ability to operate more tasks simultaneously. Kingston is a manufacturer that specializes in making high-quality, affordable computer memory. If you've never opened up a computer before, the process can seem overwhelming. Thankfully, memory can only go in one specific place in one specific way.

Instructions

  1. Desktop Computers

    • 1

Unplug your computer. Before you open your computer's case and poke around inside, it is important to unplug every cable and device from it to clear it of its electrical charge.

    • 2

Open your computer's case. This can be done by removing the two large screws that hold the side panel of your computer in place and sliding it off. Be sure not to lose the screws, as they'll be necessary for reattaching the case later.

    • 3

Locate your computer's PCI slots. These are long, narrow plastic slots located on your computer's motherboard. If you're adding RAM to your computer, you'll be looking for the PCI slots that are empty.

    • 4

Plug your Kingston Memory into the available PCI Slot. It can only go in one way due to the grooves on the bottom of the chip, so don't worry about plugging it in wrong. Push it gently down into the slot until you hear a "clicking" noise - this is the clip that holds it into place firmly securing it into the slot. Repeat this process for each chip of memory you have.

    • 5

Put the side of your computer's case back on and plug it in. Turn on your computer and you'll now be working with additional memory thanks to your installation.

    Laptop Computers

    • 6

Turn of your laptop and remove the battery.

    • 7

Turn your laptop upside down so that the bottom is facing you.

    • 8

Use a screwdriver to remove the cover to the RAM compartment on your laptop. It is a small square lid held into place by five small screws. It is the only thing that is removable on the bottom of the laptop.

    • 9

Snap the Kingston RAM chip into place. It can only go in one way, so don't worry about doing it wrong. Instead of pushing down into a slot like a desktop RAM chip does, this one snaps into place.

    • 10

Close the RAM compartment back up, being sure to screw it securely back into place. Turn your laptop on and you'll now be working with more RAM than before.
