An increasing number of people have been completing their educations through online schools. One of the areas available for online study is medical coding. At hospitals, descriptions of diseases, medical injuries, diagnoses, procedures and treatments are first verbally recorded or put into written form; but, in order for hospitals to get paid for providing health care, this information must be converted into coded form to submit to health insurance companies. Medical coders are the professionals who convert health care information into codes so that hospitals can get paid. In addition, codes are also used to evaluate medical processes, outcomes, quality management, planning, marketing and medical research activities. Becoming a medical coder does require hard work. However, if you're willing to put in the work, it is possible to do the required coursework from home over the Internet.

Go to the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) website, and identify a distance education or online medical coding program that is CAHIIM approved. CAHIIM determines the standards of education preparation. If you want to improve your chances of getting a good job after graduation, it helps to get a medical coding credential from a CAHIIM-approved program.

For example, to pursue an online program in medical coding, you will need adequate Internet access, which means you will need high-speed Internet access. Take and pass the AHIMA exam, which will enable you to become a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), making you eligible for employment as a medical coder. Being an RHIT means that you graduated from an associated degree program in medical coding, and being an RHIA means that you graduated from a bachelor's degree program in medical coding. Once you get an RHIT or RHIA, you are able to seek a job as a medical coder.
