How to Talk to Someone Online Through a Chat Page
You can use online chat pages for fun or for work purposes. It's a great way to communicate with others quickly (real time) and for free. When you need to talk to someone online through a chat page, both parties need to have an account with the same online website service. If you'll be chatting with someone you know, you're best off using an instant messenger chat room.

1
Sign up for and log into an online website that provides chat services and other community features. Popular chat services can be found on Yahoo!, Gmail (allows you to chat with your other friends on Gmail) and AOL.
-
2
Create a chat profile to let others in the room know a little about you and your personality. This could include a photo, quote and a short biography.
-
-
3
Install JavaScript or any other plugins that are required to run your chat room properly. Depending on the browser you use, you will likely be automatically prompted to install a plugin if it is missing. Turn off any pop-up blockers that are enabled in your browser.
-
4
Search for the text entry box, which is usually located toward the bottom of the chat screen, when the chat page opens. This is where you will type messages to other users. Type in a short note to assure that it is working properly. If you see your message display on-screen for all to see, then you are ready to talk to someone.
-
5
Instant message or "whisper" to other people you see on your chat page by selecting the name of the user and choosing the option to send what is called a "PM" (private message) or "IM" (instant message).

Tips & Warnings
If you don't want to receive messages from a particular chatter, click the user's name and then "Ignore." Use smilies to complement your text when you're chatting (just search for the tiny yellow face on the screen). It helps other users to understand your tone and mood while chatting. You can also use emoticons for this purpose---they allow you to "emote" a feeling or emotion in the chat room. Some chat rooms give you an option to integrate a web cam and a headset with the service. This is if you want others to see and hear you talk when you're chatting.
Never give out your personal information, such as credit card number, social security number, address or even phone number, in a chat room. Beware of spammers who patrol chat rooms, sending mass messages asking you to click on other sites.
