How to Open WPS Files in Open Office
The OpenOffice Productivity Suite is a free alternative to Microsoft Office. OpenOffice contains a word processing program, a spreadsheet program, a database program and PowerPoint-equivalent program. The suite of programs can open many different file formats created in other software programs. The software package can even open and convert Microsoft Works word processor files. You can then save the WPS file as an OpenOffice Writer file.

Starting OpenOffice and Opening Your WPS File

Right-click the file you want to open and choose "Open With."

Choose "OpenOffice" from the list of programs. The operating system will list a suggested program, but you can click "Other Programs" to see a list of programs on your computer.

Click "OK."

Make formatting changes to the opened file. When OpenOffice Writer opens a file, the formatting will be lost. You will have to reformat the file to look like the original. Settings such as bold, italics and underline will not convert when opened with Writer.

Save the file by clicking the "File" menu and choosing "Save As." Enter the name of the file, choose a location where you want the file saved, and click "Save."

Save your document frequently as you edit.
You may want to keep your original WPS file so you will have a backup.
Early versions of OpenOffice could not open WPS files. If your version is not opening the file, upgrade your version. The upgrade is free.

OpenOffice 3.2.1 thru 3.3 (current version) don't seem to have the option of.WPS files. The files can be opened by MS Word or Works and then converted to DOC format. Microsoft is pretty wierd when it comes to Works so it may very well be a licensing issue. Hopefully the future versions of Open Office will have the option again.

Except that WPS is not a listed file type for step 2, and if you don't specify a file type, the file opens as a blank page, at least in my copy of Open Office 3.3.0.

I have a similar issue working on a friend's computer; I have the WPS files but need to open them with OpenOffice 3.2; 3.2 though no longer has the selection of "WPS 2000/Office 1.0, *.wps. Any other way to convert these files? -

Using OpenOffice 3.2.1 the "WPS 2000/Office 1.0 (*.wps)" option is not available as described here. Maybe something changed with the most recent version of OO. Does anyone know of another way to access these files directly? JP
