How to Make Doll Slippers

While doll slippers can be expensive to purchase, you can make your own quite easily. Adapt a simple Mary Jane style doll slipper to bedtime slippers, dress shoes or baby shoes for a flat footed doll of nearly any size. You may embellish or decorate the slippers as much as you desire and even opt for a variety of fabrics, especially for larger dolls.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Felt, no more than 9 inches by 12 inches required
  • Scissors
  • Paper and pencil
  • Needle and coordinating thread
  • Embroidery floss, ribbons or buttons as desired
  1. Step 1

Trace your doll's feet onto a sheet of paper. Draft a second pattern piece shaped like a block letter "J." The straight portion of the "J" should be long enough to wrap fully around the sole piece of the foot. This will form the instep of your doll slipper. You will also need a very small strap. For a tiny doll slipper, the strap piece can be stitched of thread, as opposed to making it out of felt.

  2. Step 2

Cut two doll slipper soles from felt. If your doll has feet without shaping, these can be identical; however, you may need to shape them accordingly if your doll has a left and right foot. Cut two instep pieces from the same or a contrasting color felt. You will also need two strap pieces from felt or narrow ribbon, as you prefer.

  3. Step 3

Line up one sole with a felt instep piece. The curve of the "J" should match up to the toe of the sole piece. The ends of the "J" should meet up and overlap slightly.

  4. Step 4

Use a needle and coordinating thread or contrasting embroidery floss to stitch the instep onto the sole. Sew up the overlapping ends of the "J" shape on the inside of the foot. Stitch the strap of your Mary Jane doll slipper into place.

  5. Step 5

Add buttons, beads, ribbon or trims as desired. Small buttons, scaled appropriately for your doll, can be used at the ends of the straps. Embroider flowers onto the instep for a charming touch, or try tiny bunny ears and a nose for a pair of bunny doll slippers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add a 1/4-inch seam allowance, and cut outer and lining pieces if you would prefer fuzzy or satin doll slippers.
