Pick a planting location that gets full sun and has well-drained soil. Add some composting soil to the area to improve the quality of the soil. Plant daylilies in the spring or fall.

  2. Step 2

Dig holes about 8 to 10 inches apart and 1/2 inch deep to plant the daylily seeds or bulbs. When replacing the soil into the hole, mound it up in a circle to help the rain water run off. Using raised flower beds is also an option for growing daylilies.

  3. Step 3

Add mulch to the flower bed to help minimize weed growth. Water the daylily plants regularly and spread the plants out if they start to look crowded as the seedlings grow.

  4. Step 4

Deadhead flowers regularly once blooms appear; this will help keep plants strong and encourage abundant flowers throughout the bloom season.

  5. Step 5

Divide unruly growth as overcrowding occurs. When one grows lilies there will always be an abundance of plants to share with friends as flower beds are divided to maintain space for the flowers. At the end of the growing season, save some of the seed pods to have seeds to plant for the next year's garden.

Tips & Warnings
  • Give daylilies room to grow and spread. Plant them in an area with generous room for the flowers.
  • Divide the daylilies when they become overcrowded.
