How to Draw a Romantic Flower

No flower is more traditionally romantic than the rose. Roses are referenced in literature from Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" to Gertrude Stein's poem "Sacred Emily," and is a staple Valentine's Day gift. There are many varieties of rose, but the rose bud is a simple one to draw and is easily recognizable.

Instructions

    • 1
      Draw a U shape

Draw a U shape that flares out slightly at the edges. This is the base of the rosebud.

    • 2
Draw a kidney bean shape on the left side of the U shape

Draw a kidney bean shape on the left side of the U shape, getting broader at the base of the U. This is the outer petal.

    • 3
Draw a smaller kidney bean shape coming from the right side

Draw a smaller kidney bean shape coming from the right side of the U and fitting into the shape drawn in Step 2. Draw a convex line on top of the U, connecting the two sides together.

    • 4
Draw a shape resembling a yin yang symbol

Draw a shape resembling a yin yang symbol in the top center of the flower. This is the beginning of drawing where the flower petals are tightly wrapped in the center of the rosebud.

    • 5
Draw a series of concentric lines in the top left

Draw a series of concentric, curving lines in the top left part of the rosebud. This shows the folds and layers of petals inside the rosebud.

    • 6
      Draw the stem

Draw the stem, with a W shape at the point where the stem meets the rosebud. Shade in the lines where petals join each other, and where the petals curve.

    • 7

Shade in the rest of the rosebud and the stem. Keep the edges darker than the center of the flower to illustrate depth.
