By default, Windows XP will recognize and assign a drive letter to any hard drive or device connected to the computer. In most cases, it chooses the first letter that is available. Sometimes, this will cause a conflict with an already-existing drive and make it appear that the hard drive is not available. In a few easy steps, you can learn how to change hard drive letters in Windows XP.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click on "Start" and select "Control Panel."

  2. Step 2

Double-click on "Administrative Tools," and then double-click on "Computer Management."

  3. Step 3

Click on "Disk Management." On the right-hand side will be a listing of all drives attached to the computer.

  4. Step 4

Right-click on the drive for which you wish to change the drive letter and select "Change Drive Letters" and "Paths."

  6. Step 6
