Besides stains, static cling is fabric's worst enemy. It's frustrating to put on clothes that cling to your body in all the wrong places. When the air is dry, static electricity can be a constant battle. But some simple steps can help to eliminate this perennial annoyance in your dresses and other apparel.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wire coat hanger
  • Clean, damp cloth
  • Fabric softener sheet
  • Liquid fabric softener
  1. Step 1

Hang the dress in the bathroom while a hot shower is running and the bathroom door is closed. In about 5 minutes, the humidity will eliminate the static cling.

  2. Step 2

Run a wire coat hanger over the length of the dress. A plastic hanger will not work; it's the metal that helps to absorb the static.

  3. Step 3

Put the dress in the dryer with a wet washcloth for 10 minutes to get rid of the static cling.

  4. Step 4

Rub a fabric softener sheet all over the dress, inside and out, to absorb the static.

  5. Step 5

Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid fabric softener with water in a spray bottle and lightly mist the dress all over. This method works best on cotton and polyester dresses---dresses that are washable. The method may damage silk and should not be used for silk dresses.

Tips & Warnings
  • To help prevent static cling, be sure to use fabric softener sheets while drying. Taking clothes out of the dryer before they are completely dry will help to eliminate the problem.
