Making your own backpack is a simple enough project for those experienced with sewing and challenging enough to help a beginner hone her skills. A pouch backpack is a drawstring sack that has shoulder straps so that you can wear it as a backpack. You can use any kind of fabric to make a pouch backpack, but the heavier the fabric the sturdier your backpack will be. They make excellent bags for kids to tote around coloring books in, or for adults to use on day trips and errands.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Fold down a 2-inch flap of fabric across each 16-inch side of the fabric. Fold the flaps so the wrong side of the fabric is touching. Sew across the bottom of each flap leaving a tube so that you can later pass your cording through. Fold the fabric in half, right sides together, so that you have a 16-by-18 inch rectangle of fabric. The tubes will be at the top of the fabric. Pin the sides together.

  2. Step 2

Sew the pinned together sides, stopping right before the opening to the tubes. Trim any loose threads and turn the bag right side out.

  3. Step 3

Cut a 1/4-inch slit through both layers of fabric in the 2 corners at the closed end of the bag. Slip the grommet half with the long shank up through a hole and slip the flat grommet half on top of it. Place the grommet tool base under the shanked grommet between and set the other part of the tool onto the top of the flat grommet. Strike 2 to 3 times solidly with a hammer. Lift the top part of the tool to see if the grommet is secured. If not, strike 2 to 3 times more. Repeat for the other hole.

  4. Step 4

Cut two 2-yard lengths of cording. Slip 1 end of 1 cord into the opening of a tube on the right side and pull it out the left. Stick it into the left side of the other tube and pull it out the right. Both cord ends will be on the right side. Repeat the process for the other cord. This time, feed it into the left side of the tube and out the right, then through the right side of the second tube and out the left. Both ends of the second cord should be emerging from the left side of the pouch. Take the 2 ends of the cord on the right side of the bag and make sure the ends are even. Slip them through the grommet on the right side and tie in a secure knot. Repeat on the left side of the pouch. To use, pull the cords to close the bag like a drawstring pouch, and slip a cord over each shoulder.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can change the length of the cord to fit wearers of various sizes.
  • A pouch backpack cannot carry heavy items and could hurt your back if you try.
