How to Convert Google Video Files

Internet users can download Google video files directly from the Google video website. By downloading the files, you can watch Google video files when you are offline. However, if you want to add them to your portable media player, you may need to convert the files. Converting your Google video file can be done without using any additional software. Once you convert the files, you will be able to watch them on your computer and add them to your portable media player.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Google Video homepage (see Additional Resources).

    • 2

Click the "Download video--iPod/PSP" link in the box to the right of the Google video you want to download. A small window will open. Close that window.

    • 3

Right click the "this link" link located to the right of the Google video. Select "Save As." A new window will open.

    • 4

Click inside the "File name" text box. Then, change the ".mp4" ending of the file name to ".FLV."

    • 5

Click the "Save as type" box underneath the "File name" box and select "All Files." Click "Save." The Google video file will be saved with a .FLV format on your computer.

    • 6

Visit the Video Codezone homepage (see Additional Resources).

    • 7

Click the "Video Conversion From Local PC" tab at the bottom of the web page. Then, click the "Browse" button beneath that tab.

    • 8

Select the Google video file you downloaded.

    • 9

Click the "Output Format" drop box. Choose which format you want to convert the Google file into (see Tips below). Then, click "Convert/ Download." The Google video file will be converted into the format you choose. You will then be taken to a download link for the newly converted file. Right click on that link and select "Save As" to save the newly converted file to your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • The format you select in Step 9 will be determined by how you intend to watch or use the newly converted video. For example, if you wish to put the video on an iPod, you would want to select "IPOD MP4 Video." Users wanting to watch the video in the DivX Media Player (see Resources below) would choose "Divx, AVI, Xvid AVI (.avi)." You will also want to remember that you can convert the same file more than once. Doing so will allow you to convert the file into several different formats (depending on your personal needs).
