How to Create Employment Applications

Learn how to create employment applications that you can use for gaining information about potential employees. The application can be as extensive as you want or it can ask for the basic information. You must be careful as to what information you ask for on a basic or extensive employment application so that you do not violate any laws regarding a person's right to privacy and discrimination. These are steps for a basic application with more sections you could add listed in the "Tips" section.

      Open a new Microsoft Word document.

      Type your company name on the first line. On the second line, type, "Employment Application." Highlight both lines and center on the document.

      Skip down two lines and type, "Name." Next, move down a line, and then type, "Address." Move down one additional line and type, "City, State and Zip Code." On the next line type, "Phone Number." Each entry should be added using the Bold feature.

      Skip down two lines and type, "Schooling." Move down a line and type, "Elementary School." Go to the next line and type, "High school." Move down an additional line and type "Post Graduate." Go to the next line and type, "College." Each entry should be added using the Bold feature.

      Skip five lines and type, "Employment." Provide a line for the most recent employer or, at the very least, the second most recent employer. Ask for pertinent information such as years employed, names of supervisors, name of the company, address and phone number as well as a short list of the job duties performed.

      Skip down two lines and type, "Have you ever been convicted of a felony?" The entry should be added using the Bold feature.

      Skip down two lines and type, "Signature and Date." The entry should be added using the Bold feature.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask about Military experience. Ask if the person has any family or friends working for the company. Ask for references.

  • You cannot ask the age of the applicant.
