How to Make Spiral Ribbon

Decorate gifts with handmade spiral ribbons.

If you want to add a little bit of a "wow-factor" to your gift wrapping, place a spiral ribbon on top of the present. Spiral ribbon bows sold in stores can retail for several dollars apiece. However, you can decorate your presents for a fraction of that cost when you create your own gorgeous curled ribbons. It is simple to do, and anyone can do it -- even young children.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of ribbon to fit around your gift with approximately 6 inches extra on each end. Wrap it around the gift and tie the ribbon in a knot, allowing the 6 inches on each side to hang loose.

    • 2

Open the scissors wide. Grab one of the loose ends of the ribbon.

    • 3

Place the ribbon on top of one of the scissor blades. Press the ribbon down against the side of the blade with your thumb. Keep your finger away from the sharp edge of the blade, and be sure not to cut yourself.

    • 4

Pull the scissors slowly down the ribbon while still pressing down with your thumb. Release the ribbon, and it will spiral up.

    • 5

Repeat the steps with the other loose end of the ribbon.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add other ribbons or other colors of ribbons to the bow for more dazzle. Just take a 12-inch length of ribbon, find the center, and tie it around the knot you made to tie off the first ribbon. Then, just curl the added ribbon. You can add as many as you think looks great.

  • Alternately, tie a bow instead of a knot and curl the ends of the bow.

  • Children should use safety scissors.
