Audition for a Play

Auditions can be a scary thing. By preparing yourself for the situation, you can use your nerves to better your performance.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find out if a monologue is needed.

If so, you can simply go online and search for monologues. Read through them out loud. Try to find one that is unique and brings out your best acting qualities. You are trying to separate yourself from the rest of the group.

  2. Step 2

    Practice, Practice, Practice!

You have to memorize your monologue because they need to know that you are good at memorizing lines. Practice it over and over again. When you feel like you have it memorized perfectly, practice some more! Keep in mind that this should not be done in just one night. Keep practicing up until the day of your audition. Try to get some friends or family to watch. They can hold your lines in front of them and make sure you don't slip up. Ask for their feedback. Did you put enough emotion into it? Did you mispronounce any words? How was your stage presence?

  3. Step 3

    Dress for success!

Do NOT dress in costume to go with the play you are auditioning for. That is looked down upon. Instead, dress nicely yet comfortably. You will want to be able to freely move around.

  4. Step 4

    Breathe!

Being nervous is alright, most people are before a big audition. This can actually be used to your advantage. Instead of focusing on how scared you are, turn all that negative energy into excitement. That's right! You're not nervous, you're excited. You're excited to do your best!

  5. Step 5

    Speak up.

You are performing on a stage. Make sure your voice carries. Pretend you are speaking to someone in the very back of the theater. You want to make sure even they can hear you.

  6. Step 6

You are not a statue, so why act like one?

Don't be afraid to move around a little on the stage. Just don't be excessive.

  7. Step 7

    This is an experience.

If you are not offered the part, don't fret. It doesn't mean you did bad acting. Sometimes they have preconceived looks and ideas for a character that you may not fall under. You may not be right for this part, but it doesn't mean you won't be right for another play. Keep auditioning!
