Potty Training Twins is one of the many juggling acts you will peform as a twin mum. Here's how I managed it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two Potty's or Potty Chairs
  • Toddler Toilet Seat
  • Patience
  • Portable Potty
  • Piddle Pad
  1. Step 1

You can start to Potty Train your Twins as soon as they show signs that they may be ready. They may be ready if they start to squat or crouch down when they need to go. They may start to take an interest in your toilet routine. Often toddlers will remove their nappies by themselves and be reluctant to wear them. Perhaps they will want to wear their older siblings underwear.

  2. Step 2

In order to get started you will need to purchase two potty's, potty chairs or toddler toilet seat depending on which method you choose. You will not be able to manage with one potty.

  3. Step 3

Leave the Potty's out so your Twins can see them and allow them to play with them and become familiar with them. If you have older children get them to show your twins the real use for their potties. Toddlers love to mimic their big brothers and sisters.

  4. Step 4

Encourage your twins to sit on their potties at regular intervals throughout the day and make a routine of them doing so before you leave the house, before bathtime and before bed time. When they manage to pee in the potty congratulate them and make a fuss. Show them how delighted you are with their progress - they will be as pleased with themselves and be eager to do it again.

  5. Step 5

Once your twins are using the potty and asking to use it themselves it really is time to ditch the nappies. If you use knickers or pants some of the time and nappies for other times it can confuse them. You may find that one twin will grasp the concept faster than the other. Perhaps consider just using a nappy during the night.

  6. Step 6

Keep a potty in the car. Ensure your twins are given the opportunity to use the potty at regular intervals when out and about with them. Hopefully this will save some accidents. Ensure you have plenty of spare underwear and trousers for the just in case. Never reprimand your child for having an accident.

  7. Step 7

Encourage them to use the adult toilet facilities at home in readiness for using them elsewhere. Some children can be happy using the potty but not so happy with the transisition to the "big toilet". Gentle coaxing is a far better approach than an insistent one. Let them play with the toilet paper and throw it down the pan - make it fun!

  8. Step 8

If you are trying to get your twins dry through the night it would be a good idea to purchase mattress protectors and plastic bed sheets to save your mattresses. Do not stop their bed time drink if they are thirsty but try and ensure they drink plenty of fluids during the day so they can recognise when their bladders are full.
