Raise your hand if you are a fan of flying insects in the house! Well, you’re probably one of the only people in the room with your hand raised. Most folks are afraid of or dislike fruit flies, bees, wasps, house flies, flying cockroaches ( also known as palmetto bugs in the US south) and so forth. And everyone knows how hard it is to catch flying insects with a fly catcher, having to teeter on rickety chairs and climb on counters trying to do so. Here’s a fool proof method that works every time and will clear your home of any flying insect that unwittingly enters.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Can of cheap hairs pray
  • Fly swatter
  1. Step 1

Stop trying to catch flying insects with a fly catcher or smashing your hand against the bathroom mirror trying to kill fruit flies.

  2. Step 2

Buy a large can of cheap hair spray at the drug store and keep it handy. We keep ours on top of our fridge. You might want several cans one for the kitchen, bathroom, workshop, etc.

  3. Step 3

Next time you have a flying insect visit your home, grab the can of hair spray and start squirting in the direction of the flying insect. You must be smarter than your visitor and often need to spray more than once. But aim the hairspray in the direction that the flying insect is flying so it flies right into the cloud of spray.

  4. Step 4

Spray as many times as you need to until the flying insect drops to the floor. The spray gets caught up in the insect’s wings and paralyzes them, disabling it. Once it falls to the counter or floor you can either continue to spray suffocating the insect or just squish with the fly swatter.

  5. Step 5

Remove the remains of the hair spray from your mirror with a damp cloth. In the case of fruit flies, they seem compelled to fly into the bathroom or anywhere there is a mirror so you will have to spray the mirror to catch them.

This method works every time to kill any flying insect and is safe to use at home around kids and pets. See the resource section below for more tips and articles on getting rid of unwelcome pests.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hairspray may not actually kill flying insects, but it will make their wings sticky and immobilize them. Be careful if you do have to kill them especially if the insect is a stinging insect like a wasp.
  • Be careful not to spray your pets or kids with hair spray while you are chasing the flying insect.

on 9/6/2009 I just sprayed a hornet and my 20 year old son came in the room and said 'you're still killing bugs with hairspray? You've been doing that since I was real little.' Yes I have because it works.

on 6/9/2009 Oh, this is good. I use hairspray all the time to kill flies and spiders. It will really kill spiders pretty good depending on the type of hairspray you have. The real sticky kind is good for spiders. Glues them where they cannot move, lol.

on 6/7/2009 Hair spray doesn't kill the bugs it paralyzes then so you can kill them with anything you have that will squish them when they fall to the floor or counter. If yo spray them enough they will drown in it.

on 6/6/2009 I've done this. I don't know if it kills them, but it slows them down long enough to swat them!
