Buy and Care for Candles

Buying candles seems like a simple enough task, but finding a quality product can actually be trickier than it seems. Below are some great tips to make sure that you get your money's worth.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

To start with, it is important to note that not all scented candles are the same. A scented candle purchased at a dollar store is made with synthetic scents and low-quality wax. To find a good candle, it is important to make sure that it is scented with only 100% natural oils. These candles should have a very slight oily feel to the touch and a pleasant scent. Synthetic scents can give you headaches, but natural oils shouldn't smell perfumy or too strong. They should just smell fresh.

  2. Step 2

To get the best idea of the scent, smell pillar candles from their bases. You might also ask the sales associate if you could smell a sample candle as it is burning. For jar candles, this is extremely important as the smell is not as obvious at times. Also ask the sales attendant if the candle is made from 100% natural oils.

  3. Step 3

Once you have made your purchase, proper care is important to extend the burning life of your candles. Start by placing your candle in a safe location in which to burn. For cat owners, you may want to purchase a wall sconce so that your cats cannot reach the candle. For others, a plate or tile will work fine as a resting place.

  4. Step 4

Make sure that you trim your wicks to 1/4 inch every time before you light the candle. This will keep your candle from burning too much of the wax and should lead to a steady and constant flame. It should also help to extend the life of your candle.

  5. Step 5

Hopefully these tips will help you find the highest quality candles and get the most use out of them. Good luck with your shopping!
