How to Clean a Makeup Sponge

Clean your makeup sponge with shampoo.

Makeup sponges work well to apply foundation, powders and even eye shadows. To keep the sponges working their best, they should be cleaned after each use. Since a dirty sponge can lead to skin irritation, breakouts and other skin issues, it's important to properly clean sponges to remove any dirt or oils from them, and replace them when they've reached the point of "no return."

Things You'll Need

• Cleaning rag
• Water
• Shampoo or face wash

Instructions

1. Rinse out the makeup sponge after each use with warm water. Squeeze out excess water, pat a rag over the sponge to collect any leftover moisture and let the sponge air dry the rest of the way.

2. Drizzle a few drops of shampoo or face wash over the sponge every few days and work the cleanser into the sponge with your fingertips.

3. Rinse the sponge out well, and again wring it out and pat it dry with a clean rag. Let the sponge air dry.
