Things You'll Need:
- wire coat hanger
- baking soda
- screwdriver

Step 1
First, perform a visual inspection of your vacuum cleaner. Check the cord on the vacuum for fraying and wear. If you spot any wear on the vacuum cleaner's cord, wrap the area with electrical tape. This will insulate the cord and prevent the risk of electrical shock. Visually inspect the vacuums belts and ensure they are fitted properly and there are no signs of wear. When there is excessive wear on a vacuum cleaner's belt, it will not function much longer. Replace belts as needed.
-
Step 2
Next, you will want to empty the vacuum bag or canister. It is important to empty these because your vacuum can only hold so much and you do not want to put previous dirt back into the air. Check the filters on your vacuum cleaner and ensure that they are clean. If your vacuums filters are dirty, you will have suction issues with your vacuum cleaner. Clean them out or replace as needed.
-
Step 3
Make sure that the brush on your vacuum cleaner is not bound. If your brush gets bound, it can break your vacuum belts and burn out the motor that creates the suction. Free the brush from whatever may be binding it, such as hair or dental floss.
-
Step 4
Check your hose attachment on your vacuum for clogs. Having a clog in your hose attachment will lead to loss of suction and performance. You can use a wire hanger with a slight hook at the end to remove clogs in the vacuum hose line.
-
Step 5
To freshen your vacuum cleaner, add baking soda to the canister or vacuum bag. By using the baking soda inside the vacuum cleaner, it will eliminate odors and freshen your home as you vacuum.
-
Step 6
Plug the vacuum cleaner in, and vacuum your floors.
