How to Find Writing Work on Craigslist

Craigslist can be a useful place to buy and sell used items, but it can also be a great source of job leads. There are several different ways to look for writing jobs and clients who need writers on Craigslist. As a freelance writer, you must search for clients on a daily basis to keep your work load full. Use Craigslist to make that search easier and less time consuming. Learn how to find writing work on Craigslist and start working right away.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Craigslist home page for your city. Near the bottom of the page there is a "Jobs" section. Under this there is a section labeled "Writing/Editing." Click on this to search for writing and editing jobs listed in your area.

    • 2

Look under the "Gigs" section located near the bottom of the Craiglist home page for your city. There is a section here called "Writing" that lists writing projects.

    • 3

After finding a writing project that looks promising to you, contact the client by sending them an email using their given email address or the Craigslist address assigned to each ad. If the ad asks for samples to be sent, email the client and ask them for a regular email address. The email system Craigslist uses has a small limit on the amount of files that can be sent. If you are sending samples as attachments, the email will never reach the client and will sometimes be returned to you as not sent.

Keep in mind when searching Craigslist for writing work that most of the projects posted are low-paying or non-paying. Ads asking for samples to be submitted should be avoided. These ads often use those samples without paying the writer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If typing "craigslist" into the Google search bar does not pull up the Craigslist search bar in the first result, type your keywords into Google and add this to the end: "site:craigslist.org". For example, if you want to type "writer wanted" into Google's search bar, you should type "writer wanted site:craigslist.org". The results will pull all of the Craigslist ads containing the words "writer wanted".

  • Never accept a job/project or write any articles without establishing the pay rate.

Jenny. Thanks for posting this. I think it just saved me from getting my content stolen. Should I show the prospective client my work in person? Or just show them the articles I published
