- Tape
- Air can
- Video tape cleaner
- Screwdriver (star-shaped)

Step 1
Use a tape cleaner. A video recorder cleaner can be purchased for any department store. Typically, a VCR cleaner will apply a thin coating of alcohol-based cleaner within the recorder itself. Immediately playing a VCR tape after using the cleaner will apply cleaning solution to the reels and insides of the tape.

Blow air through the side openings. Using a can of compressed air, blow through the side openings and clear the tape of any clumps of dust or dirt. Use sparingly and blow the can approximately two inches from the tape as too close could leave condensation.

Rewind repeatedly. Running a tape backward can use the heads in the VCR to clean any spots or stains off the tape itself. Be wary on using this excessively (more than ten times) as it does put stress on the tape.

Check the tape for smudges or debris. Lifting the tape access door will allow for checking the actual tape for any smudges or debris. Gently use tissue to wipe the spot.

Take apart the tape if dirt and spots continue. Use the screwdriver to remove the four screws in the corners of the tape cassette. Slowly pull apart the bottom of the tape from the top, making sure to not remove any of the internal springs and spools. With the top removed, review the immediate areas by the tape path. There may be objects within the compartments causing spotting and staining.
