How to Get Scratches Out of Formica Countertops
Formica brand laminate is an economical choice for countertop material and is available in many colors and designs. Newer finishes mimic granite, metal or wood, making Formica a popular choice for virtually any design style. Care and maintenance is very simple (everyday, nonabrasive household cleaners will do) and minor scratches can be repaired with a few easy steps. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Fine grade sandpaper
- Abrasive household cleaner such as Soft Scrub
- Common kitchen scrub sponge

Clean the area to be treated and allow it to dry.

With a light hand, use the sandpaper to sand the scratch in a small, circular motion until the scratch is gone.

Buff the area with an abrasive household cleaner or a kitchen scrubbing sponge.

Tips & Warnings
This method can cause the treated area to appear lighter in color than the rest of the countertop. If this happens, repeat Step 3 over the entire countertop to blend the finish. Formica recommends that scratches to dark or glossy finishes be treated only by professional Formica fabricators or dealers.

You'll have to replace the countertop if you did what they say. Sanding does not lighten the shade of the laminate, it actually fades it quite drastically. The surface looks worked up. Buffing does not help the appearance. Even light sanding does the damage. If you tried to match the faded color over the entire countertop you would need to sand very evenly.
