How to Open WMV Files
Portable digital devices are increasingly popular among consumers of all ages. The technology has become more user-friendly, the price of first-generation tech gadgets has dropped significantly, and dozens of audio/video players now compete for the biggest share of the consumer pie. A 2009 Associated Press article even indicates that TV stations will soon be broadcasting on popular mobile devices, further underscoring the marketability of this consumer trend. While this increased popularity and competition leads to more advanced products, a downside to these gadget wars is a flood of file formats to choose from. If your mobile device is not compatible with Windows WMV files, you will need to know how to open these files on your computer. It is fairly easy to open a WMV file if have the right free software installed.

Download a free copy of the latest version of Windows Media Player from Microsoft (see Resources). Be sure to check the most up-to-date system requirements from Microsoft (see Resources) to make sure your computer is capable of running Windows Media Player before downloading. Many computers running the Windows Operating System already feature Windows Media Player, so if you already have this program, skip this step, Step 2 and Step 3.

Install Windows Media Player by double-clicking on the recently downloaded "wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe" file. Follow onscreen instructions to complete the automatic installation process.

Restart your computer. It is always recommended that you restart after installing new programs.

Right click on the WMV file you want to open.

Mouse over the "Open With" option.

Click "Windows Media Player." Your WMV audio/video file will then open in a new Windows Media Player window.
