Instructions

    • 1

Determine if the tin toy should be cleaned. Some collectors prefer to purchase antique tin toys that show signs of aging, as these seem more authentic. Check online forums and collector's guides for advice to see if your particular tin toy falls into this category.

    • 2

If the toy is one you feel comfortable cleaning, start by removing the dirt from the toy with mild soap and water to remove surface dirt. Make sure to dry the toy completely to prevent rust from developing.

    • 3

Spray WD-40 on the toy to break up grease or stains that have developed over the years. Scrub the toy with a bit of steel wool or a Brillo pad to loosen rust or any remaining stains.

    • 4

Soak the toy in cola to dissolve and loosen the remaining rust. You may need to soak the toy for up to 24 hours.

    • 5

For difficult rust, prepare a paste of salt, baking soda and a little water. Work it into the toy with a damp sponge.

    • 6

To prevent further dirt or rust from accumulating on your tin toys, store in a dry place. In addition, you can apply a small amount of car polishing wax to the toy, making sure to wipe the wax off thoroughly after you finish buffing the toy with a chamois cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when scrubbing tin toys as you could damage the paint or even the tin itself. Always use gentle pressure.
