How to Donate Bottled Water

Any number of agencies or causes will gladly accept your donation of bottled water. Providing clean drinking water to charity, nonprofit organizations or even your local youth program is simple and won't take much time. The toughest part will likely be determining where to place your donation. Whether your business is making regular water donations as a way to build community, or your family is making a one-time contribution to a local cause, donating bottled water will be appreciated by those who receive it.

Decide where your donation will go. Check with your local Red Cross chapter to see if there is a pressing need for bottled water in your area. Perhaps there is an effort underway to assist the homeless. Call your chamber of commerce, and ask if there are upcoming charitable sporting events that would appreciate a donation. Another opportunity would be to check with your local little league or youth sporting organizations, who always are looking for ways to stretch their budgets. Your local fire or police departments also would put your donation to good use.

Determine how much water you would like to donate. Would you like to donate 1 case or 20? Shop for the best value, and keep your receipt. Charitable organizations and nonprofits carry tax identification numbers that allow you to claim your purchase on your tax return. The manager of the store may give you a discount or even foot the bill, if he knows you are donating the water bottles.

Deliver the water to the site. If you are donating to the Red Cross, Salvation Army or a local nonprofit organization, the person receiving the donation should give you a receipt of contribution. If not, ask for one. This will have all the necessary tax information you will need to claim your donation.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have a vehicle, or if you have mobility issues that won't allow you to physically purchase and deliver your donation, let the agency of your choice know, and they will likely provide assistance.
