A barometer is a scientific instrument that is commonly utilized to measure the level of atmospheric pressure in an area. A Fortin barometer is one of the most popular types of barometers. It is made of a glass tube in which is suspended a tube of mercury. The mercury rises or falls and is read in conjunction with a connected measuring rod to show the reader the current air or water pressure. It is necessary to clean a Fortin barometer to keep the glass face readable.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Foam pad, cloth or cushion
  • Dry cloth
  • Wet cloth
  • Glass cleaner spray
  1. Step 1

Place the Fortin barometer on a foam pad, cloth or cushion. The barometer's delicate glass casing is fragile and may crack if it falls over during the cleaning process. A cracked barometer is unable to read the atmospheric pressure accurately.

  2. Step 2

Orient the Fortin barometer in an upright position to keep the mercury from shifting or collecting at the top or sides. Lean the barometer against a steady surface, such as a wall.

  3. Step 3

Wipe the barometer with a dry cloth to remove most loose surface dust and debris. Use light pressure to avoid scratching the barometer's glass casing with any bits of dust that are caught in the cloth.

  4. Step 4

Wet a second, clean cloth until it is damp to the touch. Spray the barometer with glass cleaner. Wipe the barometer with the damp cloth and allow it to dry thoroughly. Depending on humidity level, this should only take a few minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful when cleaning up any pieces if the barometer is broken during the cleaning process. The glass is sharp and the mercury is toxic.
