How to Cure Extreme Heart Burn

How to Cure Extreme Heart Burn thumbnail
Use antacids as prescribed by your doctor.

Heartburn is never pleasant, but occasionally after eating something spicy or greasy, the squeezing discomfort and burning in your chest may become particularly painful. If extreme heartburn occurs, accompanied by an acidic taste in your throat, it may be the result of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). According to Mayo Clinic, It's important to address the cause of the pain and modify your lifestyle in addition to using medications to bring lasting relief and to protect the tender lining of your esophagus.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your doctor if you experience extreme heartburn more than once a week or if it returns soon after you take an antacid. In addition, you should schedule an appointment if painful heartburn is making it difficult for you to sleep at night or if it interferes with your ability to swallow with ease.

    • 2

Determine your heartburn triggers and avoid them. While some foods are common culprits, such as coffee, fatty foods, spicy foods and alcohol, you may experience extreme heartburn after eating other foods as well. Keep a log of what you eat and when you experience heartburn. You may be surprised at some of your triggers, like chocolate or ice cream.

    • 3

Eat in smaller quantities. When your stomach is full, the food creates pressure on your esophageal sphincter and allows stomach acid to enter your esophagus and throat. Try cutting your meal portions in half and eat more meals during the day.

    • 4

Buy pants that fit. A tight waistband creates abdominal pressure and exacerbates heartburn. You might also try the popular low-waisted pants to reduce pressure around your midsection.

    • 5

Enjoy your evening meal at least 3 hours before you go to bed. If you suffer from extreme heartburn, you may find that lying down before your food digests will cause stomach acid to back up into your esophagus.

    • 6

Give up smoking. Cigarette smoke may increase the production of stomach acid. Talk to your doctor about medications to help you quit.

    • 7

Wait to exercise for a couple of hours after eating. According to WebMD, working out may put pressure on your stomach, causing acids to back up. Drink lots of water, however, before and during your workout.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't allow extreme heartburn to go untreated. The strong stomach acid can ulcerate the lining of your esophagus, causing tears or the narrowing of the esophagus.
