How to Cut Styrofoam Panels

Styrofoam panels have many different important uses ranging from simple arts and crafts to home insulation. Styrofoam can be a tricky material to cut because of its unique composition; when cut it can crumble and break apart easily. Using a hot wire Styrofoam cutter works best because it is able to cut through the Styrofoam by melting the area contacted by the heated cutter, which reduces crumbling and breakage.

Things You'll Need

• Hot wire Styrofoam cutter
• Marker

Instructions

1. Outline the shape onto the Styrofoam panel. This will give a guideline while cutting. If cutting corner pieces or strips for insulation, make sure the measurements are correct.

2. Begin cutting along the line that was drawn with the marker until the shape is completely cut out.

3. Check if the piece fits into the appropriate place for insulation; if not, trim the piece with the hot wire cutter until the piece fits in place. If cutting Styrofoam for craft reasons, the hot wire cutter can be used to detail the cutout.

4. Turn off hot wire cutter and discard extra Styrofoam pieces and crumbs.

Tips & Warnings

• Cut slowly to avoid breaking the Styrofoam panel.

• Wear a protective mask and eyewear when cutting Styrofoam.
