How to Make Coconut Oil Balm

This moisturizing coconut oil balm is easily made right at home using only two natural ingredients: coconut oil and beeswax. It's free of harsh ingredients found in most commercial preparations. It soothes, protects and promotes healing for even the most dry, chapped skin. It's perfect for those who are required to wash their hands frequently. You can find beeswax in some craft and hobby stores, specialty retailers or from beekeepers. Coconut oil is available from health food stores and from specialty shops. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 2 oz. of beeswax using the kitchen scale. Put the wax into the double boiler.

    • 2

Measure 2 oz. of coconut oil by weight--not fluid ounces--with the kitchen scale, and add it to the double boiler.

    • 3

Heat on medium just until the wax melts, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon.

    • 4

Pour the hot coconut oil balm into a heat-resistant cosmetic container with a wide opening. Allow the balm to cool.

    • 5

Use your fingers or a metal spoon to scoop some of the coconut oil balm out of the jar after it has cooled. It will be firm. Hold it in the palm of your hand for a moment to warm it, and you'll be able to spread it easily.

    • 6

Massage the coconut oil balm into your hands to protect them from frequent cleansing. Smooth some onto your lips to soothe and protect. Treat dry, itchy patches and pamper elbows, knees and heels.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean the beeswax if you've purchased some that still has dirt or debris in it. Put it in an old stocking and tie a knot in the end. Set it in the double boiler over medium heat to melt the wax. The dirt will stay in the stocking, which you can discard. Pour wax that you don't plan to use immediately onto some waxed freezer paper, and let it harden.
