How to Remove Mold From a Stucco Ceiling

Stucco ceilings, also commonly called popcorn ceilings, were a popular choice in the 1950s and 1960s for their unusual textured look. Stucco is a spray-on texture that home manufacturers generally used to cover up imperfections in the craftsmanship, reflect sound and eliminate echoes. These ceilings became unpopular in the 1970s, when it was discovered that asbestos is harmful to respiratory health. If mold accumulates on your stucco ceiling, it is not difficult to remove.

Things You'll Need

• Hydrogen peroxide
• Soft bristle brush
• Newspaper

Instructions

1. Cover the floor under the molded area with newspaper or towels to catch any debris.

2. Mix a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water in equal parts in a spray bottle.

3. Spray the solution onto the molded area. Saturate the area well and allow it to sit for three to five minutes.

4. Use a soft bristle brush to scrape away the mold. Reapply the solution and repeat the process, as needed.

Tips & Warnings

• Bleach or vinegar will also remove mold from your stucco ceiling.

• Wear gloves, a mask and eye protection to avoid getting mold or the solution in your eyes and mouth. Ventilate the area well when dealing with mold.
