Separate a Mixture of Salt & Pepper

Whether you've accidentally put salt in the pepper container or you want to show your children a fun science project, separating salt from ground pepper is an easy task that you can do with things you have around the house. Does this Spark an idea?

Raw wool
Plastic ruler
Paper
Soap and water
Towel
Salt and pepper mixture

Instructions

- 1
  
  Place the salt and pepper mixture on a piece of paper.
- 2
  
  Thoroughly clean a clear, plastic ruler with soap and water and dry it with a towel.
- 3
  
  Thoroughly rub the ruler with wool on both sides to develop static electricity.
- 4
  
  Carefully lower the ruler into the salt and pepper mixture. The salt will remain on the paper, and the pepper will lift onto the ruler.
- 5
  
  Carefully lift the ruler onto a separate piece of paper or directly into the pepper container and brush off the pepper.

Tips & Warnings

You can also use a piece of plastic or Plexiglas instead of a ruler.
