Decorating a car for the newlyweds to drive off in after the wedding is one of the most fun parts of the reception. Typically done by those in the wedding party, it is a tradition that dates back to the early 1900s. You can make the decorations traditional and classic, or fun and wacky. Whatever you decide to do, the look on the bride and groom's face as they emerge will be priceless.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tin cans
  • Liquid chalk
  • Streamers
  • Balloons
  • Sign
  1. Step 1

Tie some tin cans on the rear bumper. Punch holes through clean, used can bottoms. Make sure that the string you use is sturdy. Cut it to 3-foot lengths and tie a knot through the hole you've punched to secure.

  2. Step 2

Fill the car with helium balloons. That way, when the newlyweds open the car door, the balloons will float out to them. You can then give the balloons to guests. Be sure to use balloons in the wedding colors of the night.

  3. Step 3

Use liquid chalk to write "Just Married," "Congratulations" or another sentiment on the car windows. You can also write the names of the bride and groom or whatever you choose. Liquid chalk should be used only on car windows, not car paint.

  4. Step 4

Attach a sign to the trailer hitch or back bumper of the car. A traditional sign is heart shaped and says "Just Married," but be creative. Cartoons of the bride and groom, their names or the date of their wedding are other sign ideas.

  5. Step 5

Put chocolates in the glove box or center console, and leave two wine glasses in the back seat, paired with the couple's favorite kind of bubbly. That way they have something to snack on and can toast their new marriage when they get to their hotel room.
