How to Clean Antique Stuffed Animals

Antique stuffed animals can be highly collectible. Often these items are also dirty and dusty from years of storage in attics or in boxes. However, you can clean these stuffed animals so you don't damage their integrity and still have them looking like new. Learn how to clean antique stuffed animals.

Things You'll Need

• Water
• Vinegar
• Brown paper Bag
• Baking soda

Instructions

1. Try simply wiping it down with a damp (not wet) cloth. If the stuffed animal is simply dusty, this can be enough to revive it and get rid of the grime. Remember to shine glass or button eyes as well. Allow to dry.

2. Spritz the animal with a mixture of 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar if the stuffed animal is odorous. This will deodorize it and leave it smelling fresh.

3. Place the stuffed animal in a large paper bag if it is especially dirty or odorous. Pour baking soda into the bag (depending on the size of the stuffed animal, 2 cups is right for a standard-sized 12-inch teddy bear) and shake to coat the animal. Leave for 20 to 30 minutes, and then remove. Brush the stuffed animal carefully to loosen all the dirt and baking soda particles.

Tips & Warnings

• Take your stuffed animal to the dry cleaner if the above methods don't work. The dry cleaner has special methods of cleaning delicate fabric.
