The latest home security cameras feature quality picture and often good sound resolution. Many systems can pick up audio and are useful both indoors and outdoors. Camera kits can provide you with everything you need to set up your home security system, with many starting around $100. Most can be found with wireless capability or adaptability, and can be connected directly to the home computer. Instillation of home security cameras is not difficult; the hardest part is lining up the camera angle and fine-tuning the system to get the reception you want.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine where you want your cameras. The cameras will need to be placed at appropriate distances to have a clear focus of the area being monitored. The distance required will vary with the camera used. This will be in the manufacturer's directions.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a home security camera kit at a home goods store. Read the manufacturer's instructions before taking anything out of the box. Follow the instructions provided for proper instillation and warranty. The kits can also be added onto as needed.

  3. Step 3

Mount the cameras on walls or structures such as beams, rooftops or fencing. Try to place the camera as high up as possible to gain the best view of the area. Keep the camera away from other obstructions such as wires, hooks or hanging plants. If mounting the camera higher than your head, use a step ladder to avoid reaching or stretching too far.

  4. Step 4

Hold the mounting brackets to the surface facing the direction you want. Mark the position of the mounting screws. Drill holes to start the screws and then attach the camera to the wall. Secure as tightly as possible. If you are using a wireless system, skip the next step and proceed to Step 6.

  5. Step 5

Determine the best way to hide wires if you are using a wired system. Exposed wiring can be vandalized or damaged. Try to keep wires inside walls or tightly hidden inside corners. If possible, run the camera wire along the same line as your electrical wires. This will allow you to place access panels near accessible outlets to gain entry to the wiring. Once you are near the monitoring unit, you may need to cut a one-inch-square hole near the floor for the wire to exit the wall. Run the wire under carpeting to the monitoring unit.

  6. Step 6

If you are using a wireless system, make sure the antennae from the camera have a clear path of transmission to the receiver. This means avoid such items as trees, wires and satellite receivers. Mount the camera using Step 4 above, and point the antennae towards the signal receiver.

  7. Step 7

Following the manufacturers instructions which come with the kit. attach the wiring to the monitor or attach the signal receiver to the monitor. The wires should be able to simply screw or plug into the monitor.

  8. Step 8

Turn on the system and check for a signal. If you cannot see accurately, reposition the camera. If the signal is distorted, you have reception problems which mean connection issues with the wiring or something is blocking the wireless signals. Alter the camera angle and check for loose connections.
