Homeschoolers need books. Lots of books. Buying all the curriculum, textbooks, readers, workbooks, supplies, and kits you need can get expensive. Here are 10 tips on how to save money on homeschool curriculum and supplies.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  1. Step 1

Check a curriculum publisher’s website to see if they have a for sale board. Many publishers such as Peace Hill Press, Sonlight, Winter Promise, and Tapestry of Grace allow resale on their sites.

  2. Step 2

Peruse homeschoolclassifieds.com and vegsource.com/homeschool. If you don’t see what you’re looking for on these sites, write a free “Want to Buy” post with details of what you’re looking for.

  3. Step 3

Email your homeschool friends and let them know which titles you’re searching for. Buy, sell, or trade books with them. If you’re done with your Botany books, swap them with another family for their Zoology books.

  4. Step 4

Find used curriculum at your state’s homeschool convention or at local support group sales.

  5. Step 5

Call your nearest library and ask when they hold their used book sales. Typically, the bigger the library, the better the sale. Library sales are a book lover’s dream.

  6. Step 6

Don’t forget eBay, half.com, and Amazon Marketplace, where sellers list their used books.

  7. Step 7

Search on yahoo groups for homeschool groups. Many of them are specific to a curriculum or educational philosophy, and allow members to post “For Sale” and “Wanted” ads.

  8. Step 8

Sign up for an educator’s discount card at major booksellers such as Borders and Barnes and Noble.

  9. Step 9

Check out the online Paperback Swap book club to trade books, audiobooks, and textbooks for free.

  10. Step 10

Utilize the thousands of free books, resources, and lesson plans that are available online. Phonics games, math worksheets, history resources, audiobooks, and writing prompts can all be had with a little searching.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you’re done with a curriculum, sell it and rollover the money to buy next year’s books.
