How to hard wire a radar detector. Get rid of the annoying cord that goes to your cigarette lighter.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Radar Unit
  • Hard Wire Kit
  • Wire Cutters
  • Wire Strippers
  • Zip Ties
  1. Step 1

Find your mounting location for the Radar Unit and mount it where you like.

  2. Step 2

Locate your vehicles interior fuse box, and your owners manual.

  3. Step 3

Refer to the manual and find which fuse is for either the radio, cig. lighter, or ignition. You need to find a fuse that is for something that only powers on and off with the vehicle, not one that has constant voltage all the time.

  4. Step 4

Locate a screw in or around the fuse box area, and connect your black (ground) wire of the kit there.

  5. Step 5

Locate which ever fuse you selected (I use the radio myself) and pull the fuse out, insert the red (hot) wire along with the fuse back into it's spot. Make sure the hot wire is in contact with the metal leg of the fuse.

  6. Step 6

Run your power plug from the kit to the unit, plug it in, and turn the vehicle on. Next turn the radar unit on, and it should now turn on/off with the vehicle.

  7. Step 7

Hide your remaining wire somewhere, usually along the headliner edge, or lower edge of the dash and make it nice and snug. Get your remaining wire nice and neat and zip tie it somewhere out of sight around the fuse box.

  8. Step 8

Your unit is now hard wired and will come on/off with your vehicle, and you now have no cords running in front of your dash!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure vehicle if OFF and key is OUT of ignition before messing with the fuse box!
