Clay is a wonderful natural skin care product, but it can also help blisters heal. Whether you have a small blister that is just forming, or one that has progressed to the swollen, painful stage, this treatment can help reduce pain and infection, prevent blisters from getting worse, and help speed healing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 Teaspoon Powdered Clay
  • Hydrogen Peroxide 3%
  • Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Needle
  • Adhesive Bandage
  • Cotton Swabs
  1. Step 1

Wash hands with an antibacterial skin care product. Clean an unopened blister and the surrounding area well with Hydrogen Peroxide or Isopropyl Alcohol and a clean cotton ball or tissue. Do not clean an opened blister with alcohol- instead, Betadine can be used if you do not have Hydrogen Peroxide. Use care- don't scrub the area- and gently pat dry.

  2. Step 2

Examine your blister. If the surface is dull and the skin is not transparent, or if your blister has already been broken, skip Step 3. If the blister surface is thin, shiny, and fluid can easily be seen under the surface, proceed to Step 3.

  3. Step 3

Sterilize the needle with the Isopropyl Aloohol and a clean cotton ball or tissue. Carefully puncture the blister with the needle, from the side rather than straight through the center. Using a clean cotton ball or tissue, gently press any fluid out of the side of the blister, and clean the area well.

  4. Step 4

Using a cotton swab, mix the clay with a few drops of Hydrogen Peroxide or water until a thick paste is formed. Use the swab to dab the clay over the blister and the affected area as thickly as possible. Cover with as large of an adhesive bandage as will fit over the blister, and do not let the edges of the adhesive touch the edges of the blister. Allow to set overnight.

  5. Step 5

Remove the bandage the next day. If the dried clay removes with the bandage, apply more clay to the blister and the area around it. If the clay remains on the blister, re-coat the area with more clay. Apply a new adhesive bandage. Repeat for 3 days if needed. Within few days healthy skin should be showing where the blister used to be. At this point you should remove any bandaids and clay from the blister and just let it dry out. The dried blister will probably peel off within a few weeks.

Tips & Warnings
  • The clay used can be Kaolin, Montmorillonite, Bentonite or any other spa-quality clay that would normally be used in facials or in intestinal or health-food purposes. It can be purchased at most health food stores, and is a helpful addition to any first-aid kit.
  • An unruptured blister should begin to heal within 2 days- it will simply disappear and be reabsorbed.
  • A ruptured blister make take longer, and will generally dry up and peel off after several days.
  • Keep the blistered area clean and dry. Avoid wetting the area. Do not apply oils or moisturizers to blistered areas. To help the healing process and avoid re-injury, avoid pressure or friction on the blistered area.
  • If any discolouration appears around the blister, or if there is unusual swelling surrounding the area, seek medical attention.
