Build a Relationship with Your Dog

Our dogs are a part of our family. They can be a shoulder to cry on, companionship in times of loneliness as well as a friend and confidant. You should spend time and bond with them every bit as much as you would a child.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A dog
  • A big heart
  1. Step 1

Establish yourself as a pack leader. Typically a dog can learn approximately 100-150 commands and are thought to be as intelligent as a 3-5 year old child depending on the breed. Dogs are pack animals and they need to have a strong person in charge of them such you cannot kowtow and allow yourself to be subject to your dogs whims. Like a child if they figure out that they can manipulate and control you they will.

  2. Step 2

Walk them regularly. The pack leader should walk the dog. Not your maid or dog walker unless you are on vacation. This is an important time for the owner and dog to bond. Make sure that the dog walks next to you, never in front of you as this is an expression of dominance. You should use a regular leash rather than a flexi lead when starting out.

  3. Step 3

Groom your dog yourself. While you can have a professional groomer do the difficult stuff the day to day things you should do. Things like brushing teeth and brushing their hair. This gives you time to be close to your dog and shows them that you care even if they outwardly don't like it.
