Parakeets are some of the most colorful and pleasant pet birds available. They have a sweet singing voice, are usually quite friendly, and can even be taught to mimic sounds and words. Here are a few tips on how to care for parakeets:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase the largest cage that you can afford and have room for. The smallest size you want to consider is 39 in. x 20 in. x 32 in.

  2. Step 2

Choose the right place for the parakeet's cage. Drafts can quickly make these birds sick, so be sure that you don't place the cage near doors or open windows. You also want to avoid placing the cage in a very noisy area, such as near a t. v., as too much noise can result in feather picking. They love bright, sunny rooms with normal levels of noise and activity.

  3. Step 3

Place several perches inside the cage at varying heights, making sure that food and water containers are easily accessible. Your parakeet will also enjoy having a few toys for entertainment and exercise. They are especially fond of swings and toys with bells attached.

  4. Step 4

Feed your parakeet a varied diet. They enjoy seeds, pellets, fruits, vegetables, and some insects, such as meal worms. You might also want to purchase a vitamin supplement to add to their water a few times a week. Be sure to provide bird sand and a cuttle bone as well.

  5. Step 5

Provide your parakeet with a safe area to fly a few times a week. Be sure to cover all mirrors and windows to prevent the bird from accidentally flying into them. Also, be sure that there are no open doors or windows that might allow your pet to get outside.

  6. Step 6

Clean the cage frequently. Wipe off perches with a damp cloth and wash food and water dishes and toys in a mild detergent, making sure that you rinse them well. Change the paper in the cage daily, or more often if it gets wet.

  7. Step 7

Give your parakeet a bath a few times per week. Some birds will happily splash in a bird bath while others prefer a lukewarm mist from a spray bottle. Experiment with your pet to see which method is his favorite.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you plan on training your pet to talk it's best to only have one parakeet so that it will bond with you more quickly and not be distracted by another bird.
  • If you don't plan on training your pet to talk consider having more than one. They are fun to watch as they interact with each other and their cheerful singing will brighten your house.
  • Avoid giving your parakeet lemons, cabbage, avocados, grapefruit or any type of processed or dried fruit.
  • Watch your pet closely for signs of illness which include sneezing, diarrhea, lack of appetite, lethargy and rapid, shallow breathing. If you notice any signs of illness take your pet to the veterinarian immediately.
  • Parakeets are messy. They will toss things out of the cage so make sure that you place the cage in an area that can be vacuumed easily.
